shortly after Chang's arrival in Peking, the Bolshevik

element was eliminated from the temporary Cabinet created

by Fong. On 27th November, Feng retired to the Western

Hills expressing his desire to retire from politics.

10. Owing to the fact that at the beginning of

December, Chang had retired to Tientsin with his troops, thus leaving a clear field for Feng and his Bolshevik friends in Peking, there were possibilities of the

situation becoming more aoute, and H.M. Minister asked

me to hold ships in readiness to proceed to Mentsin. Thereupon, I ordered "Hollyhook" to remain at Taku Bar and despatched "Foxglove" on the 4th December to relieve her, and to act as a wireless link at Tientsin. "Hollyhook", then proceeded to Hongkong via Weihaiwei

for refit.

On 4th December, I mailed for Shanghai leaving

Captain Hamilton of the "Durban" in charge of the conduct of affairs in the North with the Carlisle" and

"Foxglove" under his orders. I remained at Shanghai until the 12th December when "Hawkins" proceeded to

Hongkong.

Whilst at Shanghai, I exchanged official

oalla with Admiral Washington who was present in his Flagship U.S.3. "Kuron", and had the opportunity of meeting many British people prominent in the business world. I discussed the conditions on the Yangtse with Rear Admiral M, Anderson, 0.3.,0.7.0.,R.N., whom I had asked to meet me at Shanghai should the service permit.
